GUIDELINES FOR LAYING & MAINTENANCE OF DITTBERNER TILES

Surface preparation and laying is simple but it is important to follow instructions to ensure the best results

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Do not stack tiles outside exposed to dust, dirt and rain. Store under cover and not in direct contact with soil.

A ‘SCREED’ is a mixture of 1 part cement to 4parts clean, property graded building sand with sufficient water to give a stiff plaster. The screed must be placed as if plastering a wall to be painted. The BLOB and SPOT method must not be used.

A ‘SLURRY’ is water plus cement powder mixed to a creamy consistency.
Surface beds for DITTBERNER TERRAZZO TILES

  1. Domestic – rammed earth with minimum 40mm screed.
  2. For heavy loads – concrete based minimum 75mm thick.
  3. On existing floors – (using an adhesive) – ensure a clean, non-greasy surface for adhesive to be effective. Follow adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.

Floor levels should generally slope away from doors

LAYING.
1 & 2 above – Apply thin layer of slurry prior to screening. Do not screed an area larger than can be laid before it loses its workability.
A further layer of slurry is applied to the top of the screed. A damp but not wet tile is placed and lamped down with a suitable rubber mullet.

As DITTBERNER TILES are THICKNESSED to a very closed tolerance. It is only necessary to tap the tiles to ensure a bond.
Keep tiles clean as work proceeds using clean water and a sponge.
Change water frequently.
3 above – adhesives: Tiles must be dry before being bedded on a 3 to 10mm thick layer of adhesive. Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure that there are NO VOIDS and that FULL CONTACT is made when tamping down with a suitable rubber mallet.
DO NOT USE THE BLOB AND SPOT METHOD which leaves unsupported areas and corners.
Joint width should be 3 to 5mm to allow the adhesive to spread and cure before final grouting 2 to 3 days later. In dry areas tiles can be laid without a joint (butt jointed).

GROUTING.
Use joint width of 3 to 5mm. Fill joint to lower edge of bevel and NOT LEVEL with the top of the tile. For tiles without the bevel i.e a sharp edge, fill grout level with the top of the tile. If grouting is required a good quality proprietary brand of commercial grout should be used to ensure good results.
The work must be kept very clean during grouting as dried grout is almost impossible to remove from textured tiles.

FINISHING AND CLEANING.
FINISHING

All DITTBERNER smooth finished products are given a coating of water based sealer and FIRMGRIP products a coating of solvent based sealer, prior to packaging. Additional sealing is not normally recommended and only in instances where staining is known to be likely or the factory sealant has been damaged through the laying and / or building operations.

CLEANING
DO NOT – WITHOUT REFERENCE TO THE MANUFACTURER, USE SINK AND DRAIN CLEANERS, ACIDS (SPIRIT OF SALTS). AMMONIA PRODUCTS, MORTALIFT, OTHER STRONG CHEMICALS, STEEL WOOL AND / OR ANY OTHER FUNNIES

  1. Tiles that have been soiled by laying and / or building operations: use a strong cold water detergent and a scrubbing machine fitted with a stiff bristle brush. If this does not produce satisfactory results, please contact the factory for advice.
  2. General or daily cleaning

Use CLEAN water and liquid cleaner that is neutral and free from any harmful acids, alkalis etc, that may effect the floor. Always do a small test area prior to using a product for the first time.

  • General Notes for All Circumstances:
  • If a scrubbing machine is used, the water must be continually changed, i.e only clean water must be mixed with the soap.
  • Only natural bristle brushes must be used on the cleaning or scrubbing machine. Nylon or similar synthetic brushes or pads must not be used – these are highly abrasive and produce undesirable effects.
  • CHANGE THE WATER FREQUENTLY.
